Purity Culture Therapy

Purity culture can shape a whole lot more than what you were taught about sex. It can affect the way you relate to your body, sexuality, relationships, emotions, identity, and even your sense of worth.

If you grew up in a high-control religious environment, you may have learned that desire was dangerous, your body needed to be controlled, or being “good” meant staying within very specific rules about sexuality and relationships. Those messages can get pretty deeply rooted, especially when they were tied to shame, fear, morality, or belonging.

And even when your beliefs change, your reactions may not change right away. You may logically know that your worth is not determined by your body, your sexual history, your thoughts, or your relationship status, and still find that shame, guilt, fear, or anxiety shows up anyway.

Purity culture recovery therapy can give you space to untangle those old messages, understand how they may still be affecting you, and begin figuring out what you actually believe, value, and want now. The goal is not to replace one set of rules with another. It is to help you reconnect with yourself, rebuild self-trust, and develop a relationship with your body, sexuality, and choices that feels more like your own.

How Can Purity Culture Affect You?

Purity culture can show up in a lot of different ways. You may have changed what you believe about sex, your body, or relationships and still find that the old rules show up anyway. Sometimes it looks like shame. Sometimes it looks like anxiety, second-guessing yourself, or realizing you’re not even sure what you want outside of what you were taught.

Common experiences can include:

  • Feeling ashamed or “behind” when it comes to dating or sexuality

  • Anxiety around intimacy, vulnerability, or relationships

  • Worrying that your body, desires, or choices make you “bad”

  • Struggling to know or trust what you actually want

  • Feeling disconnected from your body or sexuality

  • Guilt after attraction, desire, pleasure, or sexual thoughts

  • Shutting down, freezing, or becoming anxious during intimacy

  • Feeling responsible for someone else’s thoughts, attraction, or behavior

  • Tying your worth to purity, modesty, morality, or being “good”

  • Second-guessing clothing, dating, relationship, or sexual choices

  • Struggling to separate your own values from the rules you were given

  • Feeling selfish or guilty when you make choices based on your own comfort or desires

You can logically know differently and still feel the old shame, fear, or expectations. When those messages were repeated for years and tied to your worth, morality, or belonging, it makes sense that they may take time to untangle.

How Can Therapy Help with Purity Culture Recovery?

Therapy for purity culture recovery can give you space to sort through the messages you were given about your body, sexuality, relationships, and what it meant to be “good.”

This can include:

  • Untangling old messages about purity, modesty, desire, and worth

  • Rebuilding trust in your own thoughts, feelings, body, and choices

  • Understanding where guilt or shame still shows up even when your beliefs have changed

  • Separating your own values from rules you were taught to follow

  • Learning to set boundaries around relationships, clothing, intimacy, or conversations about sexuality

  • Letting go of the responsibility for managing other people’s thoughts, feelings, or reactions

  • Figuring out what you actually believe, value, and want now

Sometimes simply connecting the dots between what you were taught then and what still shows up now can make things feel a lot less confusing. Therapy can give you room to untangle those old messages without replacing them with another set of rules about what you should believe, want, or choose.

What to Expect from Therapy for Purity Culture Recovery with Me

I take an eclectic, person-centered approach, which means I pull from different therapeutic approaches based on what fits you best. There isn’t one right way to recover from purity culture, and therapy shouldn’t become another place where someone else tells you what you should believe, want, wear, or do with your body. I’m passionate about helping you slow down and notice what you were taught, what still fits, what doesn’t, and what you actually think, feel, value, and want now.

In therapy, we may explore:

  • Old messages about purity, modesty, sexuality, relationships, and being “good”

  • Where your beliefs have changed but guilt, shame, or fear still show up

  • How purity culture shaped the way you relate to your body and choices

  • Feeling responsible for other people’s thoughts, reactions, or attraction

  • Separating your own values from rules you were taught to follow

  • Rebuilding self-trust, boundaries, and confidence in your own decisions

Some of what you were taught may still feel meaningful. Some may not fit anymore. And some may stay in the “I don’t know yet” pile for a while.

My goal isn’t to help you replace purity culture with another set of rules. But rather to help you untangle what you were handed, reconnect with yourself, and make sure your voice gets to be part of what comes next.
